POWFIND FIELD NOTES

A cheaper powder weekend from the Bay Area

A cheap flight can turn into an expensive ski weekend. Start with the total: airfare or fuel, airport parking, bags, ground transport, lodging, lift access, and the value of your travel time. PowFind compares travel and any lodging budget you enter; add the rest before deciding.

Give driving a fair comparison

For Tahoe, compare your own car with the entire airport-to-mountain journey. Divide fuel and lodging among actual travelers, but do not divide a per-person airfare. A lower fare into Reno is only a win after the rental car and winter equipment are included. On the road, give chain controls and storm delays room in the schedule.

Search a small range of nights

Try two to four nights and more than one departure airport. SFO, OAK and SJC are alternatives, but an early departure from the farthest airport has a cost too. Run a narrow search first; broad searches are capped, so a price-sorted shortlist is not proof of the cheapest fare anywhere.

Keep the lodging flexible

A refundable room in a town with several mountains nearby can be more useful than a prepaid slopeside bargain. Compare the cancellation deadline with when you expect to make your weather decision. Check parking fees, resort shuttles and the actual morning drive before choosing an address.

Make the final call close to departure

Use the longer forecast to keep options open, then inspect the resort's operating report and road conditions before committing. More forecast snow can mean delayed terrain openings. A smaller storm at an accessible mountain can deliver more skiing than a larger one behind a closed pass.
